The Neutron
Symbol: n Group: fermion, hadron, baryon Rest mass: 1.009 u Diameter: 1.5 x 10-15 m Charge: 0 Mean lifetime: 14.77 min (free) Spin: 1/2 |
Free neutrons are radioactive and decay to protons and electrons, if they can't stick to other atoms before. Bound in an atomic nucleus, they are often stable. The amount of neutrons determines, of which isotope an atom of an element is and has a crucial influence on the stability of this isotope. A neutron consists of one up and two down quarks, which are kept together by gluons. |
