The Pion

Pions are particles made of one up and one anti- down (π+) or one antiup and one down quark (π-) or a quantum-mechanical state of superposition between these two (π0). The values to the left only apply to the first two, the π0 is slightly lighter and with 8.4 x 10-17 seconds much shorter lived. Pions occur frequently at interactions in the atomic nucleus between protons and neutrons and so keep this together. This makes them fundamental parts of our matter, despite their short life. |
