The Gluon
Symbol: g Group: boson, gauge bosons Rest mass: 0 Charge: 0 Mean lifetime: stable Spin: 1 |
The gluon is the carrier of the strong interaction, which keeps together the quarks in the hadrons and the hadrons via pions. It is the strongest of the four fundamental interactions, 100 times stronger than electromagnetism, but it only affects a small space of about 10-15 meters. Like the quarks, gluons possess a color charge, but different to those, here it is a mix of color and anticolor. The effect is the same as with quarks, gluons can't appear as singles. There are eight different kinds of gluons, which only differ by their color charge. |
