Protons are the positively charged particles of our matter. They reside in the atomic nucleus, their number there defines a chemical element. A single proton is the nucleus of the most simple element, hydrogen. A proton consists of two up and one down quark, which are kept together by gluons. Protons make by mass the largest part of the visible matter in our universe. The largest part of this mass again is in the binding energy of the gluons. |
