22 Ti Titanium

Transition metal, mass: 47.867 u, 5 stable isotopes (46, 47, 48, 49, 50), abundance rank (earth/space): 10/21

Click image to magnify. Titanium crystal made with the van Arkel-de Boer process. 87 grams, original size in cm: 2.5 x 4.
Titanium crystal Titanium crystal
Titanium is a grey, light, but very strong metal. Is is quite frequent, but hard to extract, which makes the pure metal fairly expensive. It is used a lot for technical components and steels. Much better available than the metal itself is titanium dioxide, TiO2, the most widely used white pigment, which you can see on nearly every white painted wall. Titanium dioxide is one of the thermic most enduring molecules and one of only a few that can be found in some stars.

Titanium Titanium cylinder
Titanium sponge cylinder, 120 grams. Original size in cm: 3 x 4.

CT image knee Titanium screw
Left: X-ray computed tomography image: titanium screws in a knee. Titanium is nontoxic and corrosion-resistant and therefore is used a lot in medicine for implants.
Right: 1.2 cm long titanium screw that was in a shoulder.

Titanium oxynitride Sapphire
Left: A knife with a very thin, protective coating of titanium oxynitride.
Right: A sapphire, Al2O3, gets its blue color from impurities of iron (as Fe2+) and Ti4+.
