Manganese with crystals Manganese back
Manganese is a very common metal and is often used in alloys. It is an important ingredient in many steels. It can be found in nature in large quantities in many minerals. Its probably most famous compound is the strong oxidizing agent potassium permanganate. Every life form needs small amounts of manganese.

Manganese pieces Manganese Dendrites
Left: Small pieces of manganese, 2-5 mm each.
Right: Limestone with natural, 2 cm long dendrites made of manganese oxide (black). The red stuff is iron oxide.
