17 Cl Chlorine

Halogen, nonmetal, mass: 35.453 u, 2 stable isotopes (35, 37), abundance rank (earth/space): 11/19

Click image to magnify. Pure liquid chlorine under a pressure of 8 bars. Original size of the liquid column in cm: 0.3 x 3
Chlorine Liquid chlorine
Chlorine, which at normal conditions is a yellow-green Cl2 gas, is a very caustic substance. Elemental chlorine corrodes nearly every metal and is toxic for every creature. In nature, it always occurs in compounds, the most famous of those is sodium chloride, NaCl, which is table salt. The chloride ion (Cl-) is responsible for its salty taste. Chloride is a vital part of the body. The compound of hydrogen and chlorine, HCl, dissolved in water, gives hydrochloric acid. Chlorine also is part of the very common, but polluting plastic PVC.
